‘La Mejicana’ project consists of the repair, modernization, consolidation, and energy improvement of a single-family house in Aldán.
Alba Balmaseda was the architect in charge of the development of this project, which was nominated for the contemporary architecture prize of the European Union, Van der Rohe Award.
The house is located on a privileged plot of land facing the Aldán estuary A treasure that was received from its first inhabitants, a Galician and a German who migrated to Mexico at the time the house was built.
This project is a renovation of an existing building It would be impossible to build a new house in such close proximity to the seafront, given the strict Spanish regulations on coastal protection.
Energy improvement is an important focus in this project that had to go in hand with the house’s modernization.
The existing building’s renovation takes into account its energy improvement. Consequently, the architect Alba Balmaseda contacted us so that we would carry out an energy study of the Project and value the most cost-effective and efficient solution.
From the very beginning, both the new owners of the house and the architect of the Project were clear about the use of a renewable system for its climatization and DHW, seeking energy savings without giving up comfort.
At the time of presenting our proposal, we took into account the characteristics of the building, the climatic zone where it is located, and its new inhabitant´s needs, all perfectly coordinated and planned with the architect and the construction company.
From the very beginning, both the new owners of the house and the architect of the Project were clear about the use of a renewable system for its climatization and DHW, seeking energy savings without giving up comfort.
The result of this energy study concluded that the best energy solution for the project was the installation of a reversible air-source heat pump capable of providing heating and cooling with underfloor heating on the ground floor and fan coil units on the second floor.
Finally,the installationconsisted of the following elements:
Air source heat pumpfrom the Austrian manufacturer iDM model iPump A3-13, with reversible hot-cold process.
The heat pump integrates a 200Ldomestic hot water(DHW) storage tank.
For the heating and cooling inertia, we installed a 300-liter storage tank from Enertres, model DPI-300F, made of carbon steel with rigid polyurethane insulation. This tank has an oversized volume in case a photovoltaic installation is integrated in the future to be able to take advantage of the thermal use of the photovoltaic surplus.
To have better control of the installation, we placed humidity and temperature sensors in three representative areas of the house. The Navigator Procontrol system, which integrates theiDM equipment, allows us to vary the supply temperature based on the information provided by these sensors. In this way, we guarantee comfort throughout the house with the minimum energy cost.
In addition, both the underfloor heating installed on the ground floor and the fan coilson the second floor include their own regulation, so we can have different temperatures in each room in both heating and cooling mode.
The installation can also be regulated remotely and free of charge through the manufacturer’s app.
With climate control per room with supply temperature control and climate compensation depending on the outdoor temperature and indoor temperature, using 8 channel-zone modules and temperature and humidity sensors via cable. Control via NAVIGATOR 2.0 controller of the heat pump.
