Bela Fisterra Hotel, located in the heart of Costa da Morte, is one of the few hotels in Spain that has a geothermal system to provide air conditioning and hot water. This hotel, closely related to the sea, is also perfectly integrated with nature and has been designed with an eco-sustainable and environmentally conscious concept.
Bela Fisterra is a literary hotel closely related to the sea. Each of the rooms is inspired and dedicated to great works and authors of sea-themed literature.
Located in a natural environment and fully integrated into nature, the hotel was conceived from the beginning under a concept of sustainability. Its commitment to nature goes beyond being located in one of the most natural areas of Galicia. The owners were looking for total integration with the environment.
Therefore, they were clear from the beginning that they wanted to use a renewable system for air conditioning and DHW. Geothermal energy met all the requirements they were looking for: respect for the environment and energy savings by making use of a renewable system.
That is the reason why our proposal took this direction from the very beginning.
The heating and cooling systems we proposed took into account the great needs of a hotel. We were looking for systems that would provide total comfort while consuming less energy. In addition, when presenting our proposal, we were looking for an efficient system for the production of DHW since it is one of the major sources of energy consumption in a hotel.
Our proposal was a geothermal heat pump by the manufacturer iDM-Enertres, model Terra Twin 35 (35 kW).This equipment has a reversible cold/heat process to meet both heating and cooling demands of the hotel.
This heat pump, in addition to having one of the highest efficiencies on the market, has HGL technology for the production of DHW. This technology, patented by the Austrian manufacturer iDM, guarantees the production of DHW with minimum consumption. Therefore, it seemed to us the ideal system for this hotel, due to the high demand for DHW.
In addition, we installed an Enertres 300-litres storage tank for domestic hot water (DHW), model DPSA.
We proposed to install a 1.500-litres buffer tank with an instantaneous DHW production system of 70litres/min, considering the high demand of the hotel.
With this instantaneous DHW production system we can guarantee the hygienic production of hot water. In addition, as there is no storage, we avoid the weekly anti-legionella treatment required for this type of establishment. This means greater safety and savingssince it is not necessary to reach high temperatures to guarantee DHW production.
As for the hotel’s heating and cooling system, we proposed the installation of an inertia storage tank with 4 flow diverter valves. This way, we facilitate stratification at all times, regardless of whether the mode of operation is summer or winter.
Being close to the sea, this was a complex area for drilling, as the ground is soft and could easily collapse. For this reason, the wells had to be drilled using special drilling machines with double-head technology, which allowed simultaneous drilling and casing.
To dimension the loop circuit we carried out a simulation. This way, the subsoil’s exact thermal extraction power could be determined. This test is important in this kind of installations with high energy needs.
The tests carried out determined an extraction capacity of 62W per linear meter of the borehole.
Consequently, three 140m (459ft) deep boreholes were drilled.
Cooling and heating are provided by high-efficiency ducted fan coils with DC inverter fans and LEC technology from Daikin.
In the rooms and common areas, linear diffusers and carefully designed ventilation grilles were installed, in keeping with the elegant and minimalist style of the entire hotel.
In addition, towel radiators were installed in the bathrooms, powered at high temperatures by the Hygienik accumulator and HGL technology.
The installation was carried out between March and April 2018. The hotel opened in July 2018.
Since then, this 3-star hotel has already welcomed numerous guests who have enjoyed a natural environment in a building where comfort, design, and care for the environment have been successfully combined.
