This is an installation in Vigo that had a gas boiler for DHW and heating, with a propane storage tank on the property, and aluminium radiators as an emission system.
An air-source heat pump with fan coils was installed in this single-family house in Vigo, and later photovoltaic panels with battery storage.
The photovoltaic system provides 100% of the DHW, heating, and cooling needs, and approximately 75% of the electricity consumed by the house
After building their house in 1997, Angel and Lorena opted for a propane boiler with aluminium radiators for heating and DHW, since at that time they considered it to be the best option.
When they contacted us, they were considering changing their old boiler for a more efficient and modern system. They were looking for a system that would allow them to save money and also to feel more comfortable and safe. They wanted to eliminate the propane tank and not have to rely on calling the gas supplier.
After our first meeting, Angel and Lorena’s preferences were clear. They needed to replace their old gas boiler, but they also wanted to renew their heating system. They were also considering the possibility of installing air conditioning at least in the living room and bedrooms, as the summers were getting hotter and hotter.
They were looking for a system that would provide them with:
After carrying out an energy study and evaluating different possibilities, we proposed the solution that we considered could best adapt to what they were looking for: a system with an aerothermal heat pump and fan coil units for heating, cooling, and DHW.
We also proposed the option of installing a photovoltaic system to cover the electricity consumption of the heat pump and most of the house.
In addition, at that time there was the possibility of taking advantage of the Inega subsidies.
This way, they would achieve the 3 objectives we had proposed (savings + autonomy + comfort) with a system that in addition, was totally respectful of the environment.
Specifically, we proposed installing an Enertres Brisa Duo 12MR heat pump to replace their old Saunier Duval propane boiler.
For the heating/cooling inertia, we proposed to install a storage tank of only 100 litres since the heat pump is an inverter model that adapts its power to the demand. For the DHW we proposed to install an Enertres storage tank model DPSI FLOW 300/5, which has an instantaneous production system of 25 litres/min.
We suggested replacing their old aluminium radiators with Enertres fan coils, model Enerfit RD. This way, in addition to having a more efficient system and lower consumption, they could take advantage of the heat pump to cool the house during warm days.
To increase savings and their level of autonomy, we proposed to incorporate an installation with photovoltaic panels and battery storage.
Specifically, 7kW of panels (28 panels * 250W), 24 batteries 2VOpzs type, and 1,600Ah capacity.
According to our calculations, this installation would not only cover the consumption of the heat pump but also provide much of the electricity needed for the operation of the remaining consumption elements.
We also proposed to carry out the necessary procedures to apply for a line of subsidies that at that time were available in Galicia regarding renewable energies.
This way, the subsidy would cover approximately 30% of the investment necessary to implement the system.
When we sent them our proposal, Ángel and Lorena did not hesitate. Our approach seemed to fit exactly what they had been looking for.
They decided to carry out the installation in 2 phases. Firstly, the air-source heat pump with the fan coils, and secondly the photovoltaic self-consumption system.
The installation has been in operation since 2012.
Initially, we installed the heat pump system with the fan coils.
By the end of the first year, the results had been very satisfactory for our clients, since in addition to having a safer and more comfortable system, they were able to save more than 1.500€ in just one year compared to their old gas boiler system.
In addition, they were delighted to have a cooling system, something they found much more useful than what they had initially thought.
After seeing the savings they were achieving with the aerothermal system, they decided to go one step further and install the photovoltaic self-consumption system.
Since the moment we installed these systems more than 3 years ago, we have seen that the results have exceeded our calculations.
The photovoltaic installation provides 100% of the DHW, heating, and cooling needs and approximately 75% of the electricity consumed by the house.
This way, they have managed to reduce all the energy consumption of the house by more than 85%.
