Maria and her husband contacted us on the recommendation of their architect. They were building a modern 400m² house overlooking the Ría de Pontevedra, for themselves and their 4 children.
They were very clear that they wanted a modern and efficient air conditioning system, which would also fit in with the integral approach of the house.
After providing them with detailed information, they concluded that the system that best suited them was the heat pump.
As for the emission system, they decided that they wanted to install underfloor heating. The comfort of their family and the interior design of the house was a priority for them.
In our first meeting, we agreed that a heat pump system was the best option. Our clients were indecisive about choosing a geothermal or an aerothermal heat pump.
After this first meeting, we decided to present them with a proposal for both options. To simplify their decision, we also provided them with an energy study that allowed comparing the annual energy costs with each of the systems.
After analysing both options, our customers found that in their case the most cost-effective choice was the aerothermal system.
The initial investment was much lower and due to the location of the house, the performance of the equipment was similar since the proximity to the sea guarantees high and stable minimum temperatures throughout the year.
Once they informed us about their decision, we raised the possibility of getting more out of the heat pump. As it can provide both heat and cold due to its reversible process, we advised them to install fan coils in certain areas of the house. Thus, they would have the option of providing cooling on the hottest days of the summer.
The idea suited them, as the house has large glazed areas facing west. These beautiful windows allow them to enjoy wonderful views of the Pontevedra estuary, but at the same time, bring large thermal loads into the house.
After several meetings, we designed an integral solution for Heating + Cooling + DHW with 2 air-to-water heat pumps.
Specifically, we proposed to install two air-source heat pumps model Enertres Brisa New 12M (2x12kW.) that work in parallel against a hot/cold inertia storage tank and a DHW storage tank.
Currently, there are no single-phase heat pump models that deliver 24 kW, which is the power needed to cover the energy demand of the house. For this reason, instead of one, we decided to install two units.
These two units operate in cascade. When the power demand is less than 12 kW, only one unit works. second unit only works if the demanded power is higher than 12 kW.
When designing the installation, a large inertia storage tank (750 litres) was considered. The objective was to improve the overall performance of the installation.
In addition, it would allow them to take better advantage of the discounted electricity tariff. They would be able to store energy during those hours when electricity is the cheapest (off-peak period) and release it when energy is the most expensive (peak period). It would also be valid in case they decide to integrate a photovoltaic installation into the future system.
For DHW production, we selected a storage tank specially designed for heat pump operation. We opted for a model with a capacity of 500 litres since such a large family had high daily water demands.
Underfloor heating was designed to cover only the heating needs of the house. The fan coils were designed to provide cooling in the summer and, if necessary, provide heating support.
Underfloor heating was designed to achieve a supply temperature of around 30-35ºC (86-95ºF), to obtain the best performance of the heat pump.
The fan coils were installed only in the most sun-exposed rooms, with the main objective of reducing the temperature during the hottest days.
