Ana and Diego contacted us when they were building their new house. At the time they were considering installing a natural gas condensing boiler with solar thermal panels to cover their heating and DHW needs.
Additionally, they were exploring the idea of integrating an air conditioning system for cooling.
Regarding the emission system, they were clear that they wanted underfloor heating.
In our first conversation, they expressed their doubts regarding the advantages of installing a heat pump. They already had several budgets for this system, but they did not understand why there was such a difference in price and what benefits a geothermal installation could bring them.
They also explained that for them it was a priority to always have an adequate temperature in their home, but not at the expense of high energy costs. They were willing to assume a higher initial investment if they could amortize it in the short or medium term.
From this meeting on, we designed an integral solution for Heating + Cooling + DHW + Pool heating.
Specifically, we proposed installing a geothermal heat pump by the Austrian manufacturer IDM, model TERRA 20SW TWIN HGL. This way, they would have heating in winter and cooling in summer provided by a single piece of equipment.
We explained to them that having 3 vertical boreholes of 110m (361ft) each would allow taking advantage of the energy that accumulates in the subsoil and achieve greater savings, even with extreme weather conditions.
We proposed the installation of an IDM geothermal heat pump model TERRA 20SW TWIN HGL. In addition, we designed the underfloor heating so that they could use it for both heating and cooling. We explained to them that contrary to what they had been told, with our system it was possible to turn underfloor heating into cooling. The heat pump incorporates a sophisticated climate control system that can determine the ideal supply temperature at any given moment. This way, the risk of condensation can be avoided at the time of cooling production.
In addition, as it is a geothermal heat pump, a large part of these cooling needs would be covered free of charge through passive cooling.
Finally, we explained to them that this system would allow heating the pool completely free of charge in spring or summer when the heat pump is operating in cooling mode.
We showed them the IDM app that allows controlling the operation of the heat pump through the mobile phone. With this application, they can decide at what temperature and when each room should be heated, even when they are not at home. Additionally, the installation’s operation can be viewed in graphs and statistics at any time.
After the second meeting, their vision of the geothermal heat pump changed completely. Aware of the benefits that this system would bring them, they assumed that a higher investment was fully justified.
By using Energanova’s solution, they were able to fulfil their desire to enjoy comfort without having to worry about the energy bill.
After some weeks of work, in April 2016 we finished the installation.
In comparison to the gas boiler and air conditioning system that they initially intended to install, they have been able to save 1,800€ in one year with this system.
Ana and Diego are so happy with their heat pump system that they have decided to take a step towards self-consumption.
In July 2017, we incorporated a 3.12 kW photovoltaic self-consumption system into the house. This installation will allow them to save around 600€ more per year since it will produce much of the electricity needed by the heat pump for its operation, free of charge.
