Pedro Luis was looking for a system to air-condition his pharmacy in O Grove. He had a firm vocation to use renewable energies and so he told the architects. He was clear that he wanted to install a 100% renewable system. He was concerned that it should be environmentally friendly and in addition, be a reliable system that would provide heating and hot water.
They considered several options, but when his architect told him that there was the option of installing geothermal energy, Pedro Luis loved this proposal.
It was a suitable option to what he was looking for, as it was a renewable system that would provide heating and DHW in an integral way without the need to install additional equipment. Furthermore, it gave the possibility of providing free cooling during the hot season or even active cooling.
Pedro Luis contacted us through his architects. He was determined to install a geothermal heat pump. He wanted a quality option. Energanova proposed the installation of an iDM heat pump system since it is considered one of the best heat pump manufacturers worldwide.
Specifically, we proposed the installation of an IDM TERRA 10 S/W-P-HGL heat pump. It is a geothermal heat pump with active cooling through a reversible process since Pedro Luis was considering using it in the future.
This heat pump required a vertical loop of 150 meters (492ft).
In addition, we designed the underfloor heating so that they could use it for both heating and cooling. We explained to them that, contrary to what they had been told, with our system it was possible to use the underfloor heating to provide cooling. The heat pump incorporates a sophisticated climate control system that can determine the ideal supply temperature at any given moment. This way, it makes it possible to obtain cold without the risk of condensation.
For the heating buffer tank, we proposed to install a Hygienik 825/25 storage tank, which also allowed instantaneous DHW production.
Specifically, 7 kW of panels (28 panels * 250W), 24 Opzs 2V batteries, and 1,600 Ah capacity.
According to our calculations, this installation not only would cover the consumption of the heat pump but also provide much of the electricity needed for the operation of other consumption elements.
Since our client initially wanted underfloor heating and free cooling, we suggested installing a plate heat exchanger for passive cooling.
The underfloor heating system we proposed was the Enertop 22 from Enertres on the 2 floors, for a total surface area of 110 m² (1184ft2).
Finally, Pedro Luis accepted our proposal for an IDM geothermal heat pump system. He says he is delighted with the heat pump. He believes he has made a good choice, as he considers it to be the best brand on the market. And, in addition, he considers that the price of the installation was excellent.
The installation has been in operation for 4 years. In an interview with the client, he told us that he was interested in having an additional service from us, as he wanted to have more control over the operation of the installation.
From this meeting, we agreed to do maintenance work with 2 annual visits, one at the beginning of the summer and another one at the beginning of the winter.
So far this installation is operating in passive cooling mode during the summer through the radiant floor.
Pedro Luis is currently thinking of installing fan coils to obtain cooling in summer since up to now he has been using free cooling through underfloor heating. Having installed a heat pump with a reversible process, this is an option that has been left open for when the customer deems it appropriate to do so.
Consumption over the last few years has been very low. According to the data provided by the owner, he is saving approximately 750 € annually in comparison to a diesel boiler. This means that in about 7 years he would have the investment made completely amortized.
